Since everyone seeks bodywork for his or her own reasons, it is difficult to say ‘exactly’ what you should expect from your treatment. Each session is tailored around one’s individual needs. However, there are a few things that will prove consistent from session to session:
You will be provided with a safe, non-judgmental healing space, where confidentiality, trust and professionalism are of utmost importance.
Your time is seen as valuable. Therefore, your appointment will be kept in a timely fashion.
You are in control of the session. Your words and body language will be listened to and respected.
Open communication is suggested and encouraged at any time during your treatment.
Self-treatment is also suggested, encouraged and discussed. It is the most effective way to keep up on the progress that is made during your sessions.
You will receive a treatment designed to meet your individual needs. You can expect that your corrective therapy will contain a combination of Myofascial Release, Craniosacral Therapy, and traditional Zen Shiatsu....and may include other modalities including BARS, prayer for ancestral forgiveness, Reiki, cupping, and aromatherapy. Any given session may range from deeply relaxing to therapeutically challenging, or anything in between. Each treatment will be different; each will be a unique session tailored around your needs at that time. Open communication is essential!
Unlike other traditional therapies or conventional medicine, personalized bodywork does not just focus on the symptoms. It certainly addresses the symptoms at hand but also identifies and rectifies the root cause of the problem. This will be the reason behind the profound and lasting results.
What should I wear?
Workout clothes, yoga pants/t-shirt, swimsuit, running shorts/sports bra, tank top or however otherwise comfortable.
Do not wear any body lotion to your treatments. Body lotion makes it difficult for the therapist to hold the myofascial release techniques due to their hands sliding on the skin.
How many sessions will I need?
Results vary by individual. There are many factors that play a role in the healing process. That being said, many people experience a decrease in pain or increase in range of motion after just one session. Depending on your therapeutic goals, current situation, and discipline with self-therapy, sessions weekly, or every other week for 4 to 12 weeks is a fair estimate of necessary time.
It is our goal to help you reduce pain, restore motion and increase performance. Sleep, laughter, a good diet and a healthy lifestyle compliments bodywork and speeds recovery. I heard Myofascial Release is painful, is that true?
Oftentimes, Myofascial Release (MFR) treatments are gentle and relaxing....but from time to time a session may be therapeutically challenging. Our bodies are FEELING, PHYSICAL beings. We often tune out pain and other unpleasant sensations, but bodywork - strongly rooted in Myofascial Release techniques - encourages one to feel ALL of the sensations that may arise. This is what our bodies need to do to heal. As your therapist, I will help you recognize, acknowledge and understand the necessity behind these therapeutically uncomfortable moments. It is most important to know that although MFR may bring up physical or emotional pain, it does not force and will not injure you.
Myofascial stretching tends to elicit a warming response resembling the sensations of "taffy stretching". Some people use descriptive words like heat, burning, tingling, numbness, popping, buzzing and bubbles moving....often subtle variations of those words combined to simply form an "experience". You may become more aware of other areas of your body and feel a connection between the areas of the stretch. We refer to those areas that speak to you as your, 'fascial voice'.
It is important to listen to your body during and after a session. Some delayed soreness may be experienced. This is a NATURAL part of the healing process. Drink plenty of water before and after your treatments. And, give yourself permission to experience any and all sensations to the fullest.
What is Myofascial Release?
The fascial system is a web of continuous three-dimensional tissue that extends from head to toe. When one experiences physical trauma, scarring, surgery or inflammation the fascia loses its pliability and restrictions begin to accumulate over time. These myofascial restrictions start to exert abnormal pressure on the bones, joints, nerves, blood vessels and organs which unbalance the system and create pain both locally and in seemingly unrelated areas of the body. Often, the true cause of pain is overlooked by conventional medical practitioners because fascia does not show up on ordinary diagnostic tests (X-Rays, CAT Scans, MRIs, etc...).
John F. Barnes’ Myofascial Release Approach® contains an important time component. The treatment encompasses the entire body and follows exactly what the body needs every time. Skilled JFB MFR therapists wait at the body's barriers for a minimum of 3 to 7 minutes, allowing the body to move intuitively (unwind) as it needs. Therapy is one-on-one in a private room and is 100% hands-on. Facilitated movement is never forceful or injurious. Therapists do not lead the patient or try to interpret their feelings or experiences.
Traditional therapies only address the symptoms, tend to segment the body, and do not include consciousness' role in healing. They primarily use protocols and do not hold or wait at the fascial barrier long enough for a permanent release to occur, which results in relief that is temporary.
What is Zen Shiatsu?
Zen Shiatsu is a form of bodywork administered by thumbs, fingers, palms and elbows, feet and knees. Pressure is applied to all parts of the body along specific pathways (meridians). These are essentially the same meridians that are used in traditional Chinese medicine for acupuncture. It is understood that this technique stimulates the natural healing powers of the body, wherefore symptoms of disease lessen and vitality is regained.
The professional Zen Shiatsu therapist is trained to feel the body’s condition, particularly the circulation, by his/her hands in order to find the imbalanced areas in the body. By skillfully stimulating the imbalanced meridians, the therapist attempts to restore the balanced flow.
Will I be laying on a table or the floor?
Zen Shiatsu is ideally performed while the recipient lies on a futon on the floor. The Shiatsu recipient should be dressed comfortably in light clothing.
Myofascial Release can be applied either way, sitting or even standing! However, the traditional John F. Barnes’ Myofascial Release Approach® is performed on the table, 80% of the time.
That being said, your treatment could either be on the floor or table. This will be decided during the initial session and each treatment thereafter.
What should I do during the bodywork session?
Prior to the massage, feel free to ask the practitioner any questions about the technique or the upcoming session. During the massage, make yourself comfortable. The practitioner will either gently move you or tell you what is needed throughout the session (such as lifting your arm). Many people just close their eyes and completely relax, communicating if/when they need more or less pressure, a bolster, a blanket, or anything else relevant to the session. If you have any questions regarding the session or about the particular technique you are receiving, feel free to ask.
How will I feel after the massage or bodywork session?
Most people feel very relaxed. Some experience freedom from long-term aches and pains developed from tension or repetitive activity. After an initial period of feeling slowed down, people often experience increased energy, heightened awareness, and greater productivity which can last for days. Some delayed soreness may also be experienced. This is a NATURAL part of the healing process. Drink plenty of water. And, give yourself permission to experience any and all sensations, which may continue to arise days after your treatment, to the fullest.
What are the benefits of massage and bodywork?
Massage and bodywork can help release chronic muscular tension and pain, improve circulation, increase joint flexibility, reduce mental and physical fatigue and stress, promote faster healing of injured muscular tissue, improve posture, and reduce blood pressure. Massage and bodywork are also known to promote better sleep, improve concentration, reduce anxiety and create an overall sense of well-being.
Are there any medical conditions that would make massage or bodywork inadvisable?
Yes. That's why it's imperative that, before you begin your initial treatment, you complete the Client Intake form. It is very important that the therapist be informed of any health problems or medications you are taking.
